Grimmfest 2019 Film Feature - Why Don't You Just Die!

Runtime: 96 mins

Grimmfest Feature by: Darren TIlby

Synopsis: Andrei – a detective, and the world’s most horrible father – brings together a terrible group of people in his apartment: his resentful actress daughter, an angry thug, and a cheated cop. Each one of them has a reason to want revenge…

Grimmfest say: Marrying the noirish cynicism of the Coens’ BLOOD SIMPLE to the live action cartoonish mayhem of Gore Verbinski’s MOUSE HUNT, this baroque and bloody pitch-black crime comedy is far more Itchy and Scratchy than Tom and Jerry. Frenziedly paced and ferocious, it hits the ground running and does not let up for a second. Editing is whip-smart, the sharp, sudden plot twists and various slippery character arcs and shifts are dark and devious, and the sadistically cunning structure is the kind of thing Tarantino can only dream of. Relentlessly gory, startlingly meanspirited, and grimly hilarious, it’s brutal, bravura filmmaking that will leave you breathless.

What I'm Expecting: Why Don’t You Just Die! seems like it’s going for a reverse home-invasion narrative. One in which the ‘victim’ has invited the would-be attackers into their home. This kind of film is always an interesting one because it means we never really know who to root for. The person we’re supposed to sympathise with can quite quickly become the villain; likewise, the apparent antagonist can become the victim or hero of the piece. It can lead to an interesting dynamic, one that worked really well for Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe. I’d absolutely like something like that, perhaps with a dash of Ready or Not’s satisfyingly twisted sense of humour.
