The King of Spades
Starting out as a reflection on how drastically old friends had changed since secondary school, 'The King of Spades' soon developed into a feature-length script that garnered praise for its faithful examination of early adulthood.
The film is a character-driven drama about friendship, frustration and what it’s like being a young adult in today’s world. Best friends in secondary school, Aaron completed a degree, got himself a well-paid office job and a nice London apartment, while John dropped out of university, lives at home with his dad, is unemployed and has grown violent and impulsive with frustration. We follow Aaron as he returns to his hometown, reunites with John and tries to help him get his life together. However, John rejects any form of help other than to find the driver who ran over his dog, something he seems to have made his mission...
