One Night Only
At UK Film Review, we are always on the lookout for high-concept cinema that pushes boundaries while keeping its feet firmly on the ground. When Universal Pictures dropped the official trailer for One Night Only, it immediately caught our attention. On paper, mixing the structural tension of The Purge with the vulnerable, dialog-driven heartbeat of a Richard Linklater romance sounds almost impossible. Yet, based on this electric two-and-a-half-minute preview, director and writer team seem to have struck absolute gold.
The premise is brilliant in its absurdity: finding love is hard enough, but try doing it on the one night a year single people are legally allowed to have sex. It is a dystopian concept stripped of typical sci-fi violence and replaced with the raw, chaotic anxiety of modern dating. The trailer establishes this world perfectly, pivoting from a quiet, late-night pizza shop conversation into a sprawling, neon-soaked evening where the stakes of human connection are amplified to a fever pitch.
What makes us incredibly excited about One Night Only is how it weaponizes "the buildup". The opening sequence—a sharp, witty debate about the best parts of intimacy over a slice of extra-cheese pizza [00:26]—sets a refreshingly candid tone. It’s funny, mildly crude, but deeply human. When a character beautifully notes that the best part is the "after... two people lying there sharing a secret", the trailer signals that despite the high-concept, legally mandated chaos outside, the film’s true anchor is genuine intimacy.
Visually, the film looks gorgeous. The cinematography captures the frantic energy of a city wide awake, bursting with crowded bathroom lines [01:25] and neon-lit bars where lonely hearts are desperately trying to "find something real". The central protagonist Ally’s quest to navigate "the least romantic night of the year" gives the narrative a compelling countdown clock. "Night's almost over and we're running out of time," the voiceover warns, and you can practically feel the collective adrenaline of a society rushing to find a meaningful match before the sun comes up.
The chemistry between the leads is already crackling off the screen. A standout sequence features a brilliantly written banter match of mutual insults—mocking everything from ear shapes to hairlines—that feels far more authentic and romantic than a standard Hollywood meet-cute. It’s a testament to a script that understands that love isn't perfect; it's finding someone who makes the madness worth going through.
While we haven’t seen the final cut, this trailer gives us every reason to be optimistic. One Night Only looks to be a sharp, subversively funny, and emotionally resonant look at how we connect when time is running out. It takes a wild, satirical premise and uses it to explore a timeless question: Who would you choose if you only had one night? Consider this one very high on our watchlist.
Power Ballad
What has us incredibly excited about Power Ballad is the dynamic friction between its two leads. Paul Rudd seems perfectly cast as the rugged, everyday musician who just wanted a shot at the big time, acknowledging with a heavy heart that having his name on a song of that magnitude would have completely changed his life.
Dune: Part Three
Picking up roughly seventeen years after the seismic events of Part Two, the trailer immediately signals a shift in tone. While the first film was an act of world-building and the second a visceral war epic, Dune: Part Three—an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah—looks to be a far more claustrophobic and tense affair.
