HOME | FILMS | REVIEWS A Conceptual Artist Called Karl Marx Film Review average rating is 1 out of 5 Critic: Nina Romain | Posted on: Sep 29, 2025 Directed by: Jorge Luis Villacorta Santamato Written by: Jorge Luis Villacorta Santamato Starring: Jorge Luis Villacorta Santamato A Conceptual Artist Called Karl Marx starts with some promisingly Kafka-esque shots of a middle-aged man in a sombre black suit walking alone in a park at night, without dialogue, under flickering street lights. He then returns home to make a phone call in the dark, about wanting to be an artist, stating on the voicemail: “Being an intellectual, I will make conceptual art .” Set in 1999, the film revolves around a reincarnated Karl Marx calling his friend Friedrich to leave phone messages, and then decided to use these recordings as conceptual artwork. Jorge Luis Villacorta Santamato plays Marx, as a man who does little else but wander around his minimalist house, leaving messages on his phone. He is a reincarnation of Karl Marx, but in this life has decided to become an artist, referring to “my great work ” and rambling about people who he believes are listening to him. Santamato wrote, directed and produced this film singlehandedly, and despite his enthusiasm, this is unfortunately a good example of why this is not a good idea. The self-shot framing on video gives a sense of Blair Witch style cinema verité, but is difficult to watch for an entire feature. Marx explains: “I have been thinking about conceptual art…the effects of hard work…I need space and time to enjoy myself and my surroundings. Let’s look at it as conceptual art… ”. He has random laughing fits on the messages, although about nothing funny in particular, and when he finally slumps on the sofa, the viewer can only hope it’s to take a nap rather than start speaking again. “I’m the star of your phone, the star of your ear, I’m the one who entertains you… ” he croons to the unfortunate Friedrich, who has hopefully switched his phone off to get a good night’s sleep, and then has another giggling fit. “Another beautiful message for my wonderful exhibition …” he starts off a fresh message. The phone messages are difficult to understand due to the protagonist’s heavy Spanish accent and are delivered in a hesitant, wandering stream of consciousness. Marx talks inconsequently while peering out a barred window (presumably a metaphor for being trapped in life?). Are we supposed to believe this is his real house, as there are no personal effects, such as books or pictures, anywhere? Towards the end of the film, there’s a return to the park where Marx does some more walking around at night with deliberately badly-lit and framed shots, with frequent plane noise or wind sounds making it difficult to tell what’s going on. If Santamato is aiming for a Lynchian sense of urban dislocation, he definitely succeeds, but why is Marx in the park at night? Could he be looking or trying to escape someone or something to create a greater sense of suspense or involvement? The film is aiming presumably for a comedic, low-fi science fiction feel, but it isn’t science fiction themed, nor funny. There are films with nothing but people talking on the phone, including the 90s classic Denise Rings Up (1995), but they succeed by having a plot and interesting dialogue. “I have had a lot of fun leaving these messages… ” he announces to Friedrich’s voicemail in a final scene, although this is a feeling unlikely to be shared by the viewer. HOME | FILMS | REVIEWS Liquor Bank Film Review average rating is 4 out of 5 Critic: Jason Knight | Posted on: Feb 26, 2025 Directed by: Marcellus Cox Written by: Marcellus Cox Starring: Antwone Barnes, Sean Alexander James A short drama written and directed by Marcellus Cox and starring Antwone Barnes and Sean Alexander James. Based on a true story, this film centers on Eddie (Barnes), a young man who is struggling with alcoholism. After having been sober for a year and attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, he goes back to drinking and misses a AA meeting. In response, the group's chairperson, Baker (James) arrives at Eddie's apartment in order to find out what is going on. He quickly realises that Eddie is drifting back into alcoholism and desperately tries to convince him to change his ways. This short is very heavy on drama. The narrative revolves around the emotional and tense encounter between a troubled alcoholic and a person who wants to help him. The dialogue focuses primarily on Eddie's life, the troubles he is going through, particularly due to alcohol and Baker repeatedly attempts to talk some sense into him. As the verbal exchange progresses, it becomes more and more unstable and the atmosphere is heartbreaking and the emotions are even more vivid thanks to Luke Richards' dramatic music. The screenplay is powerful, with well-written dialogue and great character development. Still, perhaps it might had helped in understanding Eddie even better if explanations were provided regarding the circumstances that caused him to become an alcoholic in the first place. Other than that, this short has no flaws. Eddie is a broken man. He is a youth with a military background who has lost his way in life and finds solace only in alcohol. He is angry, depressed and isolated and is played brilliantly by Barnes. James is equally fantastic as Eddie's acquaintance from AA. Baker is an intelligent, patient and caring man who goes to great lengths in order to help people. Arguably, a main theme in this short is alcoholism and the effects it has on people, isolating them and damaging their physical and mental health. The film ends with a quote by Jeff Warner that promotes the idea that people are meant to help each other and that is very much present in the story, as is self-reflection. A moving story about alcoholism. With great performances and dramatic dialogue, this powerful short explores the consequences of alcohol addiction and points out the significance of reaching out. The festival team is delighted to announce that from 7th to 10th October, we will be back at our regular venue, Odeon Great Northern, Manchester, with four whole days of movie premieres, Q&As, talks, parties and exclusive events. We thank Odeon cinemas for supporting Grimmfest in these trying times. We'll be welcoming back some established Grimmfest favourites with their much-anticipated new films, alongside dazzling debut features from the next generation of groundbreaking genre talent. A real-life conspiracy theory is the inspiration for John Valley's blackly comic and surprisingly bleak THE PIZZAGATE MASSACRE, a Grimmfest European Premiere, which combines sour sociopolitical satire with a detailed and disturbing study of disenfranchised and disfunctional masculinity. We've Southern Gothic in the manner of Ingmar Bergman, in the UK Premiere of Mark O'Brien's stark meditation on faith, guilt, and retribution, THE RIGHTEOUS. There's witchcraft, paranoia, and possession, in the UK Premiere of Pierre Tsigaridis's dazzling, disorientating, hallucinogenic homage to classic Seventies European horror, TWO WITCHES. Korean director Kwon Oh-seung debuts with a dazzling reworking of a classic suspense film trope, as a young deaf woman and her mother find themselves targeted by a devious and implacable serial killer, in the fast, furious and utterly fiendish MIDNIGHT. Elsewhere, we've the UK Premiere of two smartly subversive reimaginings of classic Hollywood scenarios: Adam Stilwell's THE FREE FALL offers a surreal and slippery riff on such 1940s noir-Gothic romances as GASLIGHT and REBECCA, while Aaron Fradkin presents a satanic spin on SUNSET BOULEVARD in high camp Hollywood horror, VAL. Back in the modern world, a teenager grows ever more dissociated from reality after she invokes an online urban legend in the UK Premiere of Jane Schoenbrun's subtly disquieting low-fi gem, WE'RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD'S FAIR. Reality proves equally unreliable in Stefano Ludovico's mindblowing THE GUEST ROOM, another UK premiere, which starts as a queasily uncomfortable home invasion thriller, only to spin off into a time-twisting metaphysical parable of guilt and redemption. Unwanted guests also prove a problem for reluctant hotelier Dave, in Stefan Lernous's sour and sweaty fever dream of alienation and repression, HOTEL POSEIDON, which receives its regional premiere. And a young boy's sense of rage and alienation summons a destructive monster in Jeremiah Kipp's dark fairy tale, SLAPFACE, another Regional Premiere. Seventies European horror also provides a visual touchstone for ON THE THIRD DAY, which receives its European Premiere at Grimmfest. Daniel de la Vega's mischievous mash-up of full-blooded Latin American Gothic and classic giallo, which toys beautifully with audience expectations. The film is part of a special focus this year on Latin American Horror, which also includes the UK premiere of Andres Beltran's chilling and claustrophobic TARUMAMA, which combines Colombian supernatural mythology with an emotionally brutal exploration of bereavement and family breakdown. A mysterious wild dog provides an alienated young woman with unexpected moral support in a hostile new town, in the World premiere of Sebastian Perillo's subtly haunting dark fable, THE NIGHTS BELONG TO MONSTERS. Plus, Sartre meets De Sade in the Regional Premiere of Alex Kahuam's nightmarish, existential vision of hell, FORGIVENESS. Finally, as we begin the gradual return to some kind of normality, a reminder that things could have been a whole lot worse, with two very different, but equally chilling examinations of infection run rampant. A mysterious mutant fungus wreaks havoc among a small MidWestern community in the World Premiere of D.M. Cunningham's THE SPORE, and a virus sends the world violently, sexually insane in Rob Jabbaz's unflinchingly brutal and breakneck shocker, THE SADNESS, which receives its Regional Premiere. And that's just the feature film premieres. There are still a few additional surprises to come, including this year's closing feature, which we'll be announcing once we have all the details fully finalised. In addition, we'll have a selection of boundary pushing shorts from around the world, details of which will also be released soon. But just as a taster, we can reveal that we've the Regional Premiere of the visually astonishing cyber-fable, MASK OF THE EVIL APPARITION, which marks Alex Proyas' much anticipated return to the world of the classic DARK CITY. We'll also, of course, be celebrating the career of our guest of honour, the incomparable Dee Wallace, recipient of this year's Grimmfest Lifetime Achievement Award, with a selection of soon-to-be announced classic screenings. Yes, Grimmfest is back, folks. Up on the silver screen, bigger, and more bloodyminded and bad-ass than ever before. But this does not mean that we will be abandoning our arcane online incarnation. Those of you who have enjoyed having Grimmfest emerging from your computer and TV screens on a regular basis will still be able to do so. The festival will be a hybrid, with the live event closely followed by a virtual version, thus enabling those who are unable to join us physically to be there in spirit and enjoy the show from their own homes. If you discover that nothing has happened then you’re probably in the all clear, but don’t count your chickens because you may become the original grizzly event. If by chance something has happened then run, run as fast as you can. These are the basic rules which anybody who has ever watched a horror film at any point in their life knows to follow. The characters in ‘Friends Forever’ clearly have never watched a horror film and instead label the story ‘gnarly’ and brush it aside. This is perhaps an indicator of how the story is strong in its ideas and concept but lacklustre in execution. The film opens with the murders that echo throughout the film, instantly letting the audience know its genre with eerie music, that runs throughout the film and becomes rather cheesy and overdone by the time it’s reached its conclusion. A farmer’s corn rots - bringing in the classic fear of being blighted by the devil from both classical and biblical sources - and before you know it a mother (played hauntingly by Julie Carney) is slitting the throats of her husband and children. The murders have no apparent motive, which wouldn’t be an issue necessarily, but it becomes one as the spirits of the dead haunt a new generation. The titular ‘friends forever’ are Cassandra (Ashlee Lawhorn), Erica (Colleen O’Morrow, who gives the best, most unnerving performance of the film), Ryan (Mark Murtha) and Lisa (Paige Hoover). Its 1987 and they discover the abandoned house of the murders and decide to throw a party that evening for themselves and their friends. As expected, the party goes awry - even more awry than the party in ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge’ that resulted in a bloodbath - and before long there are piles of bodies on the floor, bloody spewing from all of their orifices. The idea of a party being haunted by the spirits of the dead is a good one, and in the more trippy scenes it is effective, however, the execution of the film as a whole means that its true potential is never realised. The characters never feel properly fleshed out, and so we never have reason to root for them - as is essential for any horror film. There is also the fact that the deaths come too quickly and are too numerous. There is no build of suspense or tension with a minor event to precede the first death, or any sense of horror that the characters experience as the deaths are in the middle of occurring. Additionally, the earlier killings are revealed too early, thus never allowing the characters to discover what is happening, which in the process would endear them to us as the audience more. This is indicative of the problems in the script, written by Jared Acker, Paige Hoover and Thomas Angeletti. They cut corners in the narrative and do not spend any time building up or creating characters. Angeletti’s directing similarly does a disservice to the story. He fails to imbue the film with any sense of setting - something essential for a haunted house film - whilst too often it feels as though the film lacks weight and gravity. This isn’t helped by the poor sound design, that makes each scene feel as though it is nothing more than just a scene in a film, rather than creating any sort of investment in the story. The score contains all the stereotypical sounds that you would expect in a horror film, and underwhelms in helping to create an eerie atmosphere. ‘Friends Forever’ is a lacklustre execution of a strong concept. It lacks the atmosphere, creativity and characters essential to any good horror film, and instead comes across as merely a cheap imitation. I am saying I didn’t expect it to be Boden and Fleck. Eric “Sleepy” Floyd played thirteen years in the NBA, making the All Star team in 1987 as a member of the Golden State Warriors. Freaky Tales makes him the heroic centerpiece of a wild anthology that loves the late 80s, Oakland, and Nazis dying some horrible deaths. Let’s party! Ryan Fleck may be an Oakland native, but his films with partner Anna Boden haven’t primed us for this campy, Grindhouse detour. Breaking in with the standout indie dramas Half Nelson and Sugar , they moved closer to the mainstream with the road tripping gamblers of Mississippi Grind before giving Captain Marvel a satisfying MCU debut in 2019. Freaky Tales feels like a return to a low budget indie mindset, where ambitious and energetic newcomers want to showcase their favorite movies, music, and neighborhoods while they splatter blood and blow shit up. The tone is set in the first of four chapters, when local skinheads make a habit of busting up a punk club. Pushed too far, the young, pierced pacifists decide to take bloody revenge with the help of a Scott Pilgrim aesthetic and a glowing green substance seemingly from another world. Episodes two and three back off on the bloodletting, but begin interconnecting the tales with shared characters. A racist cop (Ben Mendelsohn) harasses two ice cream shop clerks (Normani, Dominique Thorne) before they get the chance to battle rap star Too $hort (DeMario Symba Driver, although the real rapper is also in the cast) onstage at a local hip hop club. Meanwhile, an organized crime enforcer on the way to losing all he cares about (Pedro Pascal) disappoints a snobbish video rental guy (Tom Hanks in a fun cameo) while references to Sleepy Floyd (Insecure ‘s Jay Ellis) get more and more frequent. Part four brings everything together in an explosion of Metallica metal and Tarrantino-esque alternative history, with Floyd slicing up enough bad guys to impress Uma Thurman before breaking out the break dancing that runs beside the closing credits. If you haven’t guessed, this is a crazy ride that has plenty to offer fans of bloody fun and WTF plot turns. And while the middle chapters sometimes tread water compared with the action splatter of parts one and four, give Boden and Fleck credit for throwing us one we didn’t see coming. Buried under all this blood and camp, the film displays a genuine love of time, place and genre that you cannot ignore. These Freaky Tales are truly off the leash, usually in the best possible way. HOME | FILMS | REVIEWS Paradox Film Review average rating is 4 out of 5 Critic: Jason Knight | Posted on: Dec 4, 2021 Directed by: Vasilis Billy Blioumis Written by: Lefteris Paraskevas Starring: Panagiotis Bougiouris, Stella Fiskatori, Aristotelis Zaxarakis, Konstantinos Blioumis Something sinister is taking place and it is causing the disappearance of children. Kostas (Bougiouris) is a single father who works at the Hellenic Rescue Team. His only child Dingos (Blioumis) means the world to him and when he finds out that children have been vanishing under mysterious circumstances, he is deeply concerned. He spends a great deal of time with his son and has a friendly relationship with his neighbour Persefoni (Fiskatori). Then he realises that whatever is responsible for the disappearances might be after Dingo next. This sci-fi drama is the thirty-minute long pilot episode of the TV series Paradox and it does a great job in introducing the audience to the characters, plot and atmosphere. The story is rather intriguing and apart from children going missing, there are also bizarre occurrences happening that involve the malfunctioning of electronic devices and it is indicated at the beginning that the source of all this might have originated from space. There are emotional scenes that explore the lives and struggles of Kostas and Persefoni and there are scenes that are filled with dread and tension. Withing half an hour, this pilot episode does a great deal to indicate that this is going to be an emotional and suspenseful series. Blioumis directs well and particular praise should go to a very well executed tracking shot. This shot lasts for several minutes and the camera follows a character running through the streets, then the camera enters a car and the driver takes the viewer for a short ride, then the camera exits the vehicle and proceeds to follow another character, before elevating and filming beautiful landscapes. The creativity that was put into this long take is very admirable. Filming took place in Thessaloniki, Greece and Blioumis directs in a way that shows many areas of the city, including terrific establishing shots. The opening credits deserve recognition as they are quite mesmerising. They contain superimposed images that involve time and space, accompanied by a dynamic score and it is a sequence that notifies the viewer that they are about to experience an extraordinary adventure. Christos Antoniou provides the wonderful music which is sometimes tense and sometimes sentimental. The acting is strong and Bougiouris is emotional as a single father who is worried about his son and will do anything to protect him. Fiskatori also plays a sympathetic character who cares about others and is willing to help. This pilot episode introduces the audience to a narrative that they will most likely want to follow. There is plenty of drama and suspense and in all likelihood the heart-stopping final will make the audience look forward to the continuation. A woman (Sims) arrives by car at a desserted seashore and proceeds to walk towards the sea. She has brought a spade with her, with which she begins digging in the sand. She is obviously looking for something, as she ends up digging multiple holes because she cannot remember where exactly what she wants is buried. Eventually, it becomes apparent that she is there due to a devastating event. This short drama begins with the protagonist arriving at the beach, without providing explanations ragarding what she is up to. As the story progresses, more and more clues come to light through a series of flashbacks that alternate with the present scenes of the woman digging. These flashbacks show the woman happily spending time on the same beach with her daughter (Clifton) and burying a metal box, before filling it with belongings of sentimental value. The woman has decided to retrieve that box and her reasons are heartbreaking. This is a very sad story that is basically the aftermath of a tragedy. It centers on a person whose life has been deeply affected by a terrible event and wants to do something in order to make things better. From the beginning, it is indicated that something is not right, as she parks illegally then a few drink cans fall out of her car and she does not seem to care. She is focused on finding the box and she appears to be upset. The ending, where all questions are answered, will most likely touch the viewer's heart. Hewitt directs superbly and creates some fantastic establishing shots and the addition of David Donaldson's terrific cinematography makes them look even better. Liam MacLean makes a great contribution with the dramatic score that develops a melancholic atmosphere. With limited dialogue and a strong performance by Sims, this film tells an emotional story about loss and grief and raises awareness of hate crimes. It is a memorable viewing due to the plot and the messages that it carries and it ends up having quite a sentimental effect on the audience.
