Julian Gaskell writes movie reviews for UK Film Critic. As one of the talented UK film critics, find out more here. Julian Gaskell Who'd have thought I'd end up on here as a writer? Certainly not my nan but I feel hugely honoured and privileged to be here passing judgement on far better creative and talented people than I, mostly;) Like a lot of people born post-70s I grew up watching TV, which meant watching whatever films were on terrestrial. This meant I grew up with an addiction to John Ford films although I never knew who he was until my late 20s. Then with the advent of VHS videotapes, I got the opportunity to watch my favourite films over and over again without having to wait for the repeats. Haven't times changed? You'll be glad to know my tastes have moved on since then and I now have pretensions towards more cerebral indie international films just with less chance of enjoying them, but you never know when you might stumble across a classic... - High Peak Indie Film Festival
High Peak Independent Film Festival is a not-for-profit film festival that celebrates shorts and feature films from some of the best filmmakers around the world. The festival showcases up and coming talent from independent filmmakers across a four-day event of film, events and networking parties. Set in the beautiful town of New Mills, the festival takes place at the old theatre, New Mills Art Theatre, an almost hidden five hundred seater venue that takes you back to the past when you walk in. New Mills, only 45 minutes away from Manchester and Sheffield, is an easy commute and is worth the visit just to see the rolling hills that surround the village. It’s also known for making the famous Swizzles Matlow sweets! In the festival’s inaugural year back in 2017, the festival hit off with a bang and received great reviews from filmmakers, film lovers and those who just heard about it through word of mouth. It showed 51 films across a three and a half day event. In its second year, the festival will showcase 60 films (56 shorts, 4 features), amongst hosting an array of events and networking opportunities for filmmakers and festival goers alike. Programmes at this year's festival include our dedicated Young Filmmakers Shorts that include a selection of short films by young filmmakers aged 13-18-year-olds from around the world, a category that is always free for entry to those of that age. There is also a Women in Film programme that is dedicated to the outstanding work of female filmmakers in the independent film industry and our Best of the North which celebrates the best of local talent. As well as many other shorts programmes, we are showcasing four feature films, including holding two UK Premieres for Sarah Barker’s ‘The Subject’ and Christophe Leclaire’s ‘Le Portrait’. Our events for this year include our prestigious awards ceremony which comes jam-packed with entertainment and a live set from local artists, James Holt, and our returning movie-themed brass band night, which really is something not to be missed! We also have our free 10-hour filmmaking challenge on the Thursday and panels on Saturday and Sunday too. - Taryll Baker Film Critic | UK Film Review
Taryll Baker writes movie reviews for UK Film Critic. As one of the talented UK film critics, find out more here. Taryll Baker Since around 2010, when my love for cinema truly started, I’ve been learning to watch films in a different way to that of the general viewer. Studying the craft both in front of and behind the cameras, it quickly became a passion of mine. In recent years I started to write about films on my personal blog, and that eventually lead to landing myself in the team here at UK Film Review. Like most critics (or perhaps unlike), I try to be as positive as possible whilst providing an honest and thorough review. Although it’s very hard for me to narrow it down to just a few, my favourite films include The Lord of the Rings trilogy, 12 Angry Men, Parasite, Memento, anything Marvel/DC (the MCU is rewatched yearly) and most things Scorsese, Park Chan-wook and Quentin Tarantino. Other interests include television, with shows such as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Last Kingdom, The Walking Dead, Kingdom, Game of Thrones, and Mr. Sunshine. Theatre favourites (plays/musicals) include Hamilton, Les Misérables, Waitress, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Dear Evan Hansen and True West. You can find me on both Twitter and Instagram under the username: @taryllbaker I write short burst reviews/thoughts on Letterboxd, which if you didn’t know, is a really smart website and app for keeping track of everything you’re watching. Come join in the fun, just search my name. Read Latest Film Reviews

There are hundreds of thousands of beautiful and thought-provoking films out there, so it is important to seek them out and experience them. I am an anthropology student moving into his third year at university, and I am always looking for different perspectives on life. Favourite directors of mine include Ingmar Bergman, Richard Linklater, and Wes Anderson. I love unique colour pallets and immersive dialogue. I will watch just about anything, but I am still slightly apprehensive to watch horror films on account of my vivid imagination. I am thankful to be a part of UK Film Review, and happy to share my thoughts with anyone interested. Read Latest Film Reviews

Lawrence Bennie writes movie reviews for UK Film Critic. As one of the talented UK film critics, find out more here. Lawrence Bennie I’m a lifelong film fan but have just got back into writing about film and am delighted to be here with the team at UK Film Review! I graduated from King’s College London in English with Film Studies in 2006. Soon after, I attended the Script Factory’s Script Reading course in London before later returning to university to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Management at Birkbeck. In July 2014, I qualified as a teacher and currently teach History in the Outer London area. Of course, film history is a particular passion! Recently, I have been studying through the University of Pennsylvania, completing their Hollywood: History, Industry, Art online course. I’m interested in discovering, learning and exploring all aspects of film history and relish analysing films to share ideas, concepts and theories on film through writing. Additionally, I simply enjoy reviewing all the films I watch and writing up my thoughts, whether it’s a simple, short review or something more extended! Please read my film reviews and follow me on Twitter!
