Julian Fellowes won over a global audience with his incredible period drama TV show, Downton Abbey, back in 2010. Since then, we have had two feature films based on the series, one in 2019 simply called Downton Abbey, and then in 2022, audiences were given Downton Abbey: A New Era.

With the release of the new trailer and given a UK release date of 12th September 2025, essentially, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is positioned as a heartfelt send-off to the characters and the iconic estate, aiming to tie up loose ends and provide a satisfying conclusion to the beloved story. It will likely be emotional, reflective, and undoubtedly filled with the charm and elegance that fans have come to expect.
The First Downton Abbey Film
Set a short hop after the television phenomenon left us, the film plunges us back into the familiar, impeccably manicured world of the Crawley family and their ever-so-loyal staff. The plot, if one can call it such a dramatic word for something so utterly charming, revolves around the arrival of King George V and Queen Mary at Downton. A royal visit, no less! One can almost hear the collective gasp from Mrs. Patmore's kitchen.
Of course, this isn't just about polishing the silverware and airing out the guest rooms. Oh no. The film, in true Downton fashion, quickly establishes a delicious upstairs-downstairs dynamic with an added layer of class snobbery. The King and Queen, it transpires, bring their own retinue of pompous, overbearing servants, intent on wresting control of every last napkin and champagne flute from the bewildered but resolute Downton faithful. This, dear reader, is where the film finds its most genuine and often rather amusing conflict. Witness the delightful spectacle of Mr. Bates and Anna, usually the picture of stoic obedience, orchestrating a subtle yet highly effective coup to restore their rightful place in the Downton hierarchy. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of these characters that their petty squabbles with the King's man prove more engaging than any dramatic turn of the century.
The Second Downton Abbey Film
"Downton Abbey: A New Era" features two main storylines:
The French Villa: The Dowager Countess, Violet Crawley, announces that she has inherited a villa in the South of France from a mysterious man she knew decades ago. This news sends a portion of the Crawley family, including Robert and Cora, on a journey to the Riviera to uncover the truth behind this unexpected bequest. While there, they meet the family of the deceased Marquis and encounter some surprising revelations about Violet's past and even Robert's paternity.
Filming at Downton Abbey: Back at Downton, a film crew arrives to shoot a silent movie. This provides a fascinating glimpse into the nascent world of cinema and the disruption it brings to the traditional routines of the estate. Lady Mary takes charge of overseeing the production, which creates both excitement and challenges for the household staff. The arrival of the glamorous film stars and crew also leads to comedic moments and some unexpected romantic developments.
The film cleverly intertwines these two plots, showcasing the changing times of the late 1920s and how the Crawley family and their staff adapt to the "new era" while still holding onto their cherished traditions. It also provides a poignant and fitting farewell to the beloved Dowager Countess, as her health declines throughout the film.
