Blueprint Short Film Review

★★★★

Directed by: #LadaKopytova

Blueprint follows young screenwriter Cass, who attempts to find inspiration for her writing. She comes across a young café worker, Ezra who ignites her passion for writing and discovers that Ezra is her muse. However, this obsession of Ezra and her writing quickly merge into one, Ezra struggles to connect with Cass as she tries to make him a character in her work and their daily interactions are recorded. Ezra begins to wonder if Cass is her true self or just another character to write about. At the beginning of their relationship, there appeared to be desire and lust between the two, however, as that excitement begins to slowly wear away and the mundane elements of the relationship come to fruition, Cass slowly loses interest and is unable to create a story from Ezra.

I think one of the crucial elements to highlight within this short is the acting, real noteworthy performance from both characters, particularly Cass played by Ella Maisy Purvis. Cass appears to be a complex character, however, as the film evolves, we discover that she longs to be the ‘main character’ in her life and work and attempts to make this happen at all costs. Her selfish and narcissistic ways eventually drive her boyfriend Ezra away, his thoughts and feelings are second when it comes to her screenwriting. Ezra longs for a deeper connection with Cass and chooses to walk away than become just a character in her stories. Cass disregards Ezra’s boundaries and he urges her to live her life rather than write about his. He becomes just a pawn in Cass’ life rather than a real lover, someone to feed off for inspiration rather than form a true relationship.

I found this short enjoyable especially when the audience can view the relationship from both perspectives. Cass’s internal monologue dominates the first half of the film; however, we soon discover Ezra’s feelings towards Cass and how her actions are making him feel used and overlooked and he begins to question whether anything is real between them. There is that sense of fear in his voice perhaps because of the worry about what happens when he is unable to provide that inspiration she desperately desires.

A great story with a great cinematic style to match, Blueprint is a perfect example of toxicity within relationships and to be able to watch this downfall in real time was fascinating. Its interesting to see how people begin to change the deeper you get into a relationship, director Lada Kopytova perfectly captures this demise as well as the sweet and bitter moments of a relationship, and what happens when that lust eventually subsides.
