A Beautiful Breakup (2026) film review

A supernatural romantic comedy drama written and directed by Ajithvasan Uggina and starring Matylda Bajer and Thaksh.

Ruby (Bajer) and Krish (Thaksh) are a young couple who have arrived from London at a large isolated mansion in the Indian countryside. The property has been empty for years, and it belongs to Krish's father and they are there with the intention of spending some quality time together before their agreed separation. Unbeknownst to them, there are three spirits of people who used to live there and they are individually trapped inside magical bottles, in different locations around the building. Unaware of this, the couple proceed to clean up the place and relax. Eventually, things take a dramatic turn when tension arises between them and the phantoms get involved.

The story of A Beautiful Breakup mixes the haunted-house concept with romance and light-hearted comedy. There are some laughs, and the screenplay spends a great deal of time exploring the couple's unstable relationship, beginning with moderate happiness, before things get dramatic and Ruby and Krish begin to argue and detest each other. Uggina's directing deserves recognition with terrific aerial shots revealing the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. And commendations also go to the creativity involving the appearance of the ghosts.

The intro that explains the backstory of the three unfortunate spirits opens the film with excitement. However (as far as the author of this review is concerned) it is disappointing that the supernatural element is pushed aside for quite some time with the script focusing instead on the couple. Getting to know the characters and how things are between them has its appeal; nevertheless, there are numerous scenes that are overlong and others that are just pointless. Regarding Ilaiyaraaja's music, it is nice, however, it is exaggerated, it is too much and most of the time it is generally unnecessary, making the scenes awkward.

Thaksh portrays an Indian workaholic guy, constantly working on his laptop, neglecting his partner, but who can also be romantic. Overall, Thaksh's performance is unrealistic. Bajer does a better job as an English youngster.

The narrative of A Beautiful Breakup looks into self-reflection, separation and reminiscing the past. Primarily, the complications involving romantic relationships are analysed and also how wonderful romance is.

A film with an intriguing plot that suffers from scenes that last too long. The ending indicates that the story will continue. If it does, hopefully the sequel will be improved thanks to more convincing acting and a script that does not waste time on unnecessary material.

A Beautiful Breakup will be in UK Cinemas 13th February 2026.
