Michael Starring: Lois Brabin-Platt, Daniel Caltagirone, Eric Roberts, Lucas Aurelio A couple are targeted by multiple assassins over a bounty. Lauren (Platt) and Luke (Caltagirone) are an English married couple who due to unfortunate circumstances end up beating a young American man to death while having a drink in a pub. To make things worse, the victim was the grandson of Michael (Roberts), a wealthy man in New York City, who uses his criminal connections to place a bounty on the heads of the unlucky couple. A number of highly-skilled killers show interest in the opportunity at go after the couple. Will Lauren and Luke be able to evade their pursuers? This feature is a rather entertaining dark comedy crime film about loss, revenge, marriage and romance and it contains many interesting characters. The narrative begins with the killing of the young American, then introduces the characters, including the hitmen (and hitwomen), before they set of to find the couple, which results in shootings, deaths and tense moments as the couple tries to flee. As their are quite a few trained and experienced assassins here, there are many nasty killings and watching the deadly professionals do what they do best is the highlight of the film. Of course the violence is not the only element that makes this movie watchable, as there is plenty of dark humour and Platt and Caltagirone deliver amusing performances. The script is also emotional at times, exploring the effects of loss and the consequences of the desire for revenge. The characters are another highlight of the film and there are many of them. Lauren and Luke are the targets of the story, a simple couple whose marriage is going through a crisis. Michael is the vengeful elderly man who initiates the manhunt and has a clumsy and immature son named Paris (Ronan Summers), who is the father of the deceased American. Arguably, the assassins are the ones who take the spotlight and they all get the chance to demonstrate their killing talents. The killers include a sniper, three young women whose father was a crime lord, a hitman played by former professional mixed martial artist George St-Pierre and Justin (Aurelio) who changes his perspective on killing following a devastating loss. Another character that stands out is Lauren's brother, a huge former boxer who is now the owner of a pub. The director does a great job and creates wonderful aerial shots and some well-executed long takes. Director of photography Laura Van De Hel deserves commendations for the outstanding cinematography and the rich soundtrack contains a variety of tracks. Credit also goes to Elijah Rowen who provides the voice-over and also stars in the feature. This is a revenge film about a bounty and the people who are involved in it. It is a thrilling ride with an intriguing plot, a great deal of shooting, entertaining dialogue and a collection of great characters. Crucially, the feature looks into the joys of being in love, the pain of loss and the abyss that vengeance leads to. It does feel overlong due to the last third of its running time, which moves slowly, nevertheless, that does not do much damage. Yes, there are more actors in The Wasp than just Natalie Dormer and Naomie Harris, and each one of them—Olivia Juno Cleverly, Leah Mondesir-Simmonds, Dominic Allburn—does a fine job. But Guillem Morales’s thriller is more than anything a suspenseful showcase for two remarkable talents. Harris plays Heather, an elegant, wealthy, unhappily married woman. Carla (Dormer)—pregnant with her fourth child, married to a gambler, making ends meet with a cashier gig and whatever other cash she can pick up—is suspicious and reluctant but desperate enough for cash to agree to meet with her old classmate. Not that she and Heather were friends back at school. Heather has a proposition. You may be able to guess what that is even if you haven’t seen the trailer. You can also guess that there’s more to it than meets the eye. Indeed, there’s a chance you’ll figure out the twists as they come up. Maybe not. Either way, Harris and Dormer will draw you in and leave you marked. Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s screenplay plays with expectations in a number of ways, obscuring the label of protagonist and antagonist. The ground shifts beneath you as frequently as it does the characters. And it wouldn’t work, you wouldn’t buy it as easily as you do, were it not for these performances. Harris, and Oscar nominee for 2016’s Moonlight , delivers a nuanced, brittle performance that keeps you off center. Dormer is a revelation. Angry, apathetic, vulnerable, desperate—in her hands, Carla is a survivor more resigned than resilient. She’s less afraid to hope than she is pissed off about it. Dormer also finds moments of humor to humanize the character, moments Morales uses to let the audience breathe. Whatever its dramatic contrivances, and there are a few, the success of The Wasp boils down to riveting, believable performances that command your attention. Bishop Sometimes it is the most simple things that have the most magical of healing properties. Nature, and time spent in it, be it swathes of rolling green grass, dense woodland, or even the open water or vast expanses of desert plaines, can soothe both the mind and the soul, putting life in perspective and making all our troubles that seemed so overwhelming before dissipate. The company of people, those whom you are able to form a deep connection with can also heal the mind and soul, letting us know that there are those that understand us out there. ‘A Wild Life’ portrays both those things, and though perhaps a little surface level, it is nonetheless beautiful and heartwarming to see the impact both have throughout the film. ‘A Wild Life’ establishes itself as a meditative, reflective film from the outset, with a score that immediately comes across as fitting the mould of thought-provoking and contemplative, while the opening shot is of leaves in a stream, as the water gently washes over them. It is a film about the virtue of life, and living life in nature and with people you connect to, but it is also a film about grief and sadness, and how individual’s move past those things. This is especially true of the old man, Chester (who is played by Robert Goodman with a weary charm and bluntness about him), who we first meet as he looks across a beautiful vista across a lake and brings a gun to his head. Chester has lost purpose in his life and feels as though he lacks any reason to continue with it, and so, with his wife having given in to ‘sadness’, he feels it is his time now to commit suicide. It’s chastening seeing a man having lost hope prepared to give his life away, but his attempted suicide is interrupted when the eager young boy scout Arthur (played by Raphael J. Bishop) comes stumbling into the picture pleading for help. Arthur has become separated from his scout group, and, having injured his knee, seeks the help of Chester to both strap him up and help him find his way. At first Chester is bemused and cold, though across the film he becomes tender and it appears as though he has rediscovered his joy for life once again. As Chester and Arthur sing camp songs and wear their white vests as they clamber through the wilderness we see not a young boy and an old man, but two young boys, both full of adventure and spirit for life, as Arthur, and the woodland that surrounds the two of them, have helped Chester rediscover his spark. Marie-Andrée Lemaire directs the film beautifully, and it is aesthetically beautiful, picking up on the little intricacies of the woods and using the natural lighting, and how it reflects off water, to the film’s advantage. The script, written by Zachary Goldman, is at times a little too obvious, but whilst it perhaps doesn’t go far enough in terms of nuance with its themes, it is nonetheless solid executing its simplicity very well. ‘A Wild Life’ is a life-affirming film, one which maybe doesn’t truly push the boundaries, but is nonetheless joyous to watch, and a reminder that life is much like its title suggests. It also has connotations of royalty, nobility, power, and supremacy. The director of this cinematic piece Milton Dey weaves a suitable environment that complements the gangster/crime genre as well as the screenplay. The set design, the character arc, color palette, lighting, and costume help the makers to create a world in which the audience believes. The script written by Ashwash M.A.Chawdhury attempts to showcase the rawness of the storyline and does not glorify the gangsters and the criminals. In the chapter 1, the conversation happens between Chowdhury saheb and other person. The person in the front is kept in darkness to maintain the thrill and suspense in the scene. The plot of the movie revolves around two gangsters who are rivals and wants to kill each other to eradicate the competition. Both of them want to prove their worth to the top boss. Whether these two are successful in the planned mission or the real situation will turn out to be very different than what was in the minds of the duo keeps the audience intrigued. Milton Dey has divided the narrative into 3 chapters. This gives a more clear perspective of the story to the audience and the viewers also understand all the hidden life lessons in the storyline. The script is well crafted. It does not give away the suspense of the tale up until the concluding moments of the short film. All the characters are well written which adds to the beauty of the narrative. The realism element is given importance while working on the characters of the film. Each of the characters appears to have multiple layers to their personality. It would be very interesting for the audience to decode their characters and enjoy the short film fully. The music, sound effects, makeup and special effects, all the elements effectively highlights every nuance of the gangster/criminal drama. The dialogue delivery by the actors also has been kept very natural so that it does not hinder the entire vibe of the short- film. The only weakness with this film is the absence of subtitles. The non- Bengali- speaking audience would not enjoy the short film at the core level. The viewers don’t get to appreciate the raw nature of the screenplay. The reality of Klara's existence is starkly laid bare by the world around her: humans ask an immense amount of their artificial companions, and the family’s matriarch coldly reminds her that she is strictly under a trial warranty. One mistake, and she faces being sent back to the factory to be melted down into parts for the next generation. Visually, the film looks absolutely stunning, capturing a distinct, slightly heightened reality where the warmth of natural sunlight clashes beautifully with the cold, sterile interiors of a fractured household.
