HOME | FILMS | REVIEWS Molina Film Review average rating is 4 out of 5 Critic: Chris Buick | Posted on: Nov 25, 2024 Directed by: Rich Chambers Written by: Rich Chambers Starring: Elise Verney, Sean Tizzard First-time writer/director Rich Chambers’s absorbing short film Molina is one filled with palpable tension from each moment to the next, where nothing is ever really what it seems and ultimately leaves you with something to ponder long after all is said and done. The film opens with a man (Tizzard) and a younger woman (Verney) sitting together in silence in a pub. Their relationship is unclear, their body language not exactly friendly towards each other but other than that, very little is offered up to the particulars of their relationship. And this cagey, nature is how Molina chooses to tantalise and frankly torture its audience from that uncomfortable beginning all the way to its emotional end as those particulars in the film's own sweet time are slowly revealed to us. Chambers has structured everything out in such a meticulously clever way that every time you think you’ve got a handle on things or a fleeting idea of which way all of this is going to turn, this unmistakenly talented filmmaker with an innate knack for compelling storytelling finds a way to pull the rug out right from under you, always keeping us on the back foot, ever careful with its words and jumping back and forth throughout the narrative to keep us guessing as it occasionally decides to drop little seeds of information here and there for us to pounce upon. But within its crafty presentation also lies a film with a lot to say and even more for us to think about. Much like that other show it might well draw its inspiration from, Molina is set in the very near and not-too-hard-to-imagine future where society has arguably “advanced” into new technological horizons, but also like that show rightly raises a lot of ethical questions about how these “steps forward digitally” truly impact us, all the while also managing to weave a touching, complex and veritable story about humanity and connection. And the main leads are on point here as well, both with commendable performances that are perhaps slightly more effective in the film's more serious moments than the jovial ones but still laudable in both. Tizzard is arguably given the most opportunity to show range here, excelling in both his character's moments of absolute desperation and longing, as well as managing to match that level with a darker, creepier side which as mentioned, when all the answers and contexts aren’t immediately known, makes for quite a tense affair you feel could quickly turn at any moment. Matching them every step of the way though is Verney, who is allowed to really come into their own more in the latter half of the film and does so with a bang. It’s never really clear as to the whats, whys, and hows for either character choosing to involve themself in what the film finally reveals, or indeed what it might mean for them going forward. But despite not knowing either of those, both leads, Chambers, and everyone else involved have made sure that what we do get is a worthwhile story in its own right. Tense, surprising, and deep, Molina is as solid a start for Chamber’s surely promising filmmaking journey as they could have wanted. HOME | FILMS | REVIEWS Flies Film Review average rating is 4 out of 5 Critic: Jason Knight | Posted on: Nov 11, 2021 Directed by: Jason Housecroft Written by: Phil John Starring: Tim McGill, Julie Haves, Ceni Wyatt A troubled man isolates himself inside a large house, where he contemplates his current situation and surroundings. A man (McGill) is in his untidy home by himself. He wears a blue dressing gown and appears to be distressed. He never leaves his property and observes things that are significant to him, such as flies, broken glass on the floor and photographs. Occasionally, he becomes upset and throws things around. It is indicated that he has been in this state for a while and that he is dealing with the consequences of a terrible tragedy. He receives regular visits by a doctor (Wyatt), who seems unable to help him. This is a short drama that looks into the mind of an individual who appears to have lost his way and does not know how to move on. The overall mood is generally unhappy, with the man being sad and not smiling and unwilling to take action in order to improve his situation. His voice-over is heard throughout the film, which provides an insight into his feelings, which tend to be mostly negative. There are flashbacks that utilise different cinematography than the rest of the film and they appear to show the incident that led to the man's current state. Some scenes mix fantasy with reality and give an idea regarding the protagonist's psychological state. The special effects that are used on a character's head are impressive. There is effective use of slow motion and sound effects and Daniel Greensmith provides music that is beautiful, dramatic and mesmerising. As McGill is almost constantly on screen and almost constantly by himself, his performance is the centre of the film and he is very convincing in his role as a person whose life has come to a standstill due to a tragedy. Isolating himself, throwing things around and not interacting with anyone, he is in a rather sad situation. This is a story about loss, grief and isolation. It is a character study about an isolated man and his perspective on his life and his environment. It provides an emotional viewing experience and deserves a lot of praise. Come on guys, ‘Slashing through the snow’ was RIGHT THERE. I guess it’s at least more appropriate than ‘Oh what fun…’, seeing as this Christmas-themed horror quickly devolves into a bargain-bin, by the numbers slasher that fails in utilising its seasonal setting. Margo (Poonam Basu) and Nathan (Tyler Beveridge) arrive at a luxury rental house out in the woods for a Christmas getaway. The couple are expecting, and have taken up Margo’s sister Grace’s (Shalini Bathina) offer to spend the holidays with her and her partner Spencer (Murphy Patrick Martin). But a rift in the family following their mother’s passing means it’s not just the weather that is frosty. When a mysterious attacker in a snowman mask attacks the house, Margo must fight to protect her family. Jingle Hell suffers from the same detriments that made Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey such a disappointment. Both have an intriguing and engaging concept – taking joyous and family-friendly characters, settings and themes only to flip them on their heads and instil them with brutality, blood and carnage. But neither go beyond the surface of dressing up a murderer in a daft mask and costume and hoping viewers clap like seals at the farcical idea of a copy/paste slasher villain wearing a fancy dress outfit. Rather than deconstruct the holiday-movie genre or have fun with Christmas tropes (surely one of the killers could have come down the chimney…), Jingle Hell ends up as yet another occult horror film – just draped in tinsel this time. At least unlike Pooh, it has the good sense not to outstay its welcome at thirty minutes. So the trimmings are a let-down, and truthfully, the Turkey isn’t much better. Horror fans will be unimpressed with the violence on offer, with poor choreography and editing making ‘killing’ blows appear stunted and without the kind of intensity needed to get grizzly gratification centres grinding. The plot is predictable, with a twist so obvious that it can be seen through a snowstorm. A theme of family is at least somewhat original, though tying this into the actual story produces further bafflement and leaves a pile of unanswered questions – going beyond the obvious of why the killers dressed up in a snowman outfit. Performances are fine if forgettable. Poonam Basu is an enjoyable and relatable protagonist, though one never really senses a visceral vulnerability a pregnant mother ought to illicit. Murphy Patrick Martin takes chunks out of the scenery as the filthy rich and utterly irredeemable Spencer, and leaves the most lasting impression of the cast. Production is similarly passable – with some dynamic and stylishly presented shots and scenes. Though the blood effects fail to convince and further drag down the already-awkward action sequences. Jingle Hell really is little more than a bite-sized beige slasher hiding under a somewhat interesting premise. It barely makes use of its only intriguing element, and even the bread and butter of all great horror – character, themes and good old-fashioned violence are far below the standards set by its many, many contemporaries. If you want to watch something truly terrifying at Christmas, you’re better off with Krampus, Violent Night or Andrew Lincoln’s creepy stalker scenes in Love Actually. High Peak Independent Film Festival is a not-for-profit film festival that celebrates shorts and feature films from some of the best filmmakers around the world. The festival showcases up and coming talent from independent filmmakers across a four-day event of film, events and networking parties. Set in the beautiful town of New Mills, the festival takes place at the old theatre, New Mills Art Theatre, an almost hidden five hundred seater venue that takes you back to the past when you walk in. New Mills, only 45 minutes away from Manchester and Sheffield, is an easy commute and is worth the visit just to see the rolling hills that surround the village. It’s also known for making the famous Swizzles Matlow sweets! In the festival’s inaugural year back in 2017, the festival hit off with a bang and received great reviews from filmmakers, film lovers and those who just heard about it through word of mouth. It showed 51 films across a three and a half day event. In its second year, the festival will showcase 60 films (56 shorts, 4 features), amongst hosting an array of events and networking opportunities for filmmakers and festival goers alike. Programmes at this year's festival include our dedicated Young Filmmakers Shorts that include a selection of short films by young filmmakers aged 13-18-year-olds from around the world, a category that is always free for entry to those of that age. My particular loves are all things Marvel and any work by Scorsese, but I'm not restricted by genre so long as the plot is strong and the acting solid. I have been reviewing films for around a year, and enjoy seeing my words published where people want to read them as opposed to boring the non-cinephiles with my daily rambles. I am probably not very easily impressed as I enjoy grit, subtlety and being true to character, all of which can be hard to pull off well.
