Pearls - Rosscoe Frantz

Pearls is an original single released by Rosscoe Frantz, an up and coming folk artist from Perth. Produced by Tim Hart, this moody and heartfelt tune is accompanied with an equally sincere music video directed and shot by Mark Wong.

As Frantz sings about a hard but beautiful life, we are treated to the gorgeous setting of an overcast seaside as the singer attempts to remain standing amid shallow water, despite the tide’s powerful efforts. In a restrained but effective creative choice, the entire video consists of two main visuals, the one previously described and an astounding birds eye view as the suited and booted musician floats on the water's surface. The contrast between the natural force of the formidable ocean and something as man-made and fragile as a suit and tie elicits a gentle sombre tone that can be felt through the entire piece. This striking image is a testament to the work of production designer and camera assistant Portia Gebauer, and the controlled artistic temperament of Wong’s direction.

The verses themselves further pull the listener in, with what can only be described as a plea to a higher power concerning the hardships and joys that life throws at us. Lyrics such as ‘These waves that break, and crash over us – they too will pass in time’ serve as a simple yet earnest reminder that life is worth living. These words, albeit elementary, drive an emotion that is likely to evoke relatability for the majority of listeners.
