ForeFans follows a naive international student, Isla (Anastasia Kor), struggling to make ends meet as she decides to try webcam modelling to support herself financially. However, within the online world where every female body is treated as a commodity, the cost for her struggles may be more than she can endure.
ForeFans offers a social commentary on content creation in this current climate, with the increasing trend of webcam modelling on online sites such as OnlyFans. The piece also tackles themes such as female beauty standards, which is another apt topic within the realm of webcam modelling. Unfortunately, the piece only explores these topics at their surface level, and does not venture outside of how the female body is scrutinised within online chat rooms. While its attempts to explore these topical subjects are commendable, it's a shame that the piece never truly says anything worthwhile about them, despite a narrative focusing heavily on these themes.
Ivan Malekin, serving as the film’s cinematographer, does a commendable job as the camerawork is solid throughout; however, it primarily consists of fixed camera movement from a webcam as the central character, Isla, performs sexual acts for content creation. Also serving as the film’s editor, Ivan Malekin’s editing is fluid throughout most of the runtime, and the pacing is incredibly consistent in the first two acts thanks to this.
The ninety-four-minute runtime allows for the characterisation of Isla to be explored in depth; however, the piece rarely delves into her character traits beyond her need for financial support. It sadly doesn't justify its prolonged runtime due to these issues, and it's a shame, as the ideas and themes present are mostly apt within the current rise of influencers and content creation. While the latter half of the narrative briefly delves into her inspirations as an artist, it's only a brief piece of characterisation. As a viewer, it is frustrating to latch onto her as the central character.
Despite the narrative’s opening being consistently engaging, the dialogue struggles at times due to the poorly written crude humour. The material also begins to wear thin due to the script's inherently repetitive nature. One of the most surprising aspects of the piece is its musical score. While the use of needle drops is commendable throughout the piece as Isla struggles with her relationship and financial situation, the musical score is deeply nuanced and understated throughout the more intimate character moments.
The central performance from Anastasia Kor in her portrayal of Isla is compelling as it's an incredibly fearless showcase of a woman trying her best to support herself. Her chemistry with one of the supporting players, Andrea Véguez, in her portrayal of Fay is also incredibly riveting. While it is harsh to witness Isla’s self-confidence deteriorate throughout the narrative, the piece rarely explores her inner turmoil. The script doesn't do enough with her character to justify the themes and ideas the filmmakers are tackling.
ForeFans is ultimately a frustrating experience with a conclusion that amounts to fairly minor, due to limited character progression and exploration of central themes. It is truly a shame to see interesting and socially relevant themes and character development treated as an afterthought, with little depth beyond the surface level. Despite the premise and central performance from Anastasia Kor being compelling, the screenplay leaves a lot to be desired.
