For the feature length expansion of his 2018 short Slapface , writer/director Jeremiah Kipp complicates his tale of grief and rage with these confusing notions of abuse. He relies mainly on the unexpected bond between Lucas (August Maturo, exceptional) and a monster sometimes called the Virago Witch (Lukas Hassel, reprising his role from the short). Lucas lost his parents in a car accident and grieves deeply for his mother. He lives just off the woods with his older brother Tom (Mike Manning, who also produces). Tom’s new girlfriend Anna (Libe Barer) is concerned about the way the siblings live. The only other companionship Lucas has is a trio of bullies. One of those bullies, Moriah (Mirabelle Lee) is willing to be Lucas’s girlfriend as long as he keeps it secret. In this way, Kipp layers his original tale of grief with conflicting emotional baggage. It’s to his credit, and the endless benefit of his film, that the filmmaker never tidies up these emotional storylines. In fact, it is Lucas’s confusion over the characters who seem to both love and harm him that creates his greatest turmoil. The monster becomes a remedy of sorts to this internal conflict. The larger-than-life, terrifying presence works much the way that the monster in J.A. Bayona’s 2016 treasure A Monster Calls works. The beast allows Lucas to process the complicated reasons for his pain. Kipp’s film trades in Bayona’s melancholy magic for something more brutal. But Hassel and Maturo find sincere tenderness in their time together onscreen, which makes the horror even more heartbreaking. Not every performance is as strong, but Kipp’s ensemble finds nuance in characters that help the film compel more than just terror. HOME | FILMS | REVIEWS Closing Dynasty Film Review average rating is 5 out of 5 Critic: Joe Beck | Posted on: Sep 28, 2023 Directed by: Lloyd Lee Choi Written by: Lloyd Lee Choi Starring: Milinka Winata, Eleven Lee, Allen Chen Growing up on the streets of New York is tough, just ask any Italian American gangster (not exclusive to films directed by Francis Ford Coppola or Martin Scorsese). The Big Apple is a city of dreams and aspirations, with buildings and parts of the city that are just like a Woody Allen film or ‘When Harry Met Sally’, but its also a place where dreams go to die, and a rough city full of danger and people just trying their best to get by. ‘Closing Dynasty’ beautifully captures this side of New York City through the innocent eyes of its seven year old protagonist Queenie (Milinka Winata) as the film artfully presents childhood innocence in the backdrop of one of the most famous cities in the world. Queenie should really be at school - its a Wednesday - however, she’s a headstrong young woman with a sense of duty beyond her years. This leads to her asking people on the subway if they can spare a few dollars to save her basketball team. The money isn’t for the basketball team, and the people seem to know this as they continually reject her pleads - perhaps the most unrealistic part of the film. Queenie is an incredible protagonist, contrasting both innocence with strength. She holds her arms out as she chases the pigeons and runs down the sidewalk in the most pure expression of childish innocence, yet also swears when she discovers a diamond in the trash, and even resorts too theft in order to hustle some money. She is mature beyond her years yet so inexperienced in the world at the same time, understanding that her family is undergoing financial difficulty and that they need money, yet she collects puddle water to drink, pours a ton of sugar in someone’s coffee, and, rather hilariously, picks up a discarded cigarette and proceeds to do what she believes is smoking. 
Milinka Winata is incredible in the lead role, possessing the contrasting sides of Queenie necessary for the performance. It is a performance beyond her years, with a depth uncommon in child actors, and she truly embodies the character through her sheer personality and wide smile. Director Lloyd Lee Choi, who also wrote the script, captures the radiancy of her performance majestically through the colours and lighting used to illuminate even the darkest parts of New York, bringing the city around Queenie to life, though keeping her at the very forefront - as of course every child believes themselves to be - through his consistently excellent framing of shots. 

 There’s a kind of magic in the transcendent way in which ‘Closing Dynasty’ captures the contrast between youth and innocence, and the dire straits that have forced Queenie to take to the streets and start trying to hustle people for money. Its a story as much about Queenie as it is about New York, and the people that make the city what it truly is - a truly cosmopolitan environment in which dreams are both made and crushed, where there is beauty and innocence behind every persons story. Growing up I spent my childhood reading comics and watching films that were introduced to me by my father. He showed me sci-fi adventure films of Star Wars and flash Gordon, the Westerns of John Ford and classics of Alfred Hitchcock. I took this passion into my university study where, I began to contribute film reviews to my campus newspaper and dedicate my studies to understanding cinema. In my post study life I have wanted to contribute to the critical discussion of film and have found UK film review a place to do so. I consider my style analytical but funny (where appropriate) but am still taking the time to find my voice. Masterfully adapted from the acclaimed novel by Walter Mosley, and directed by Nadia Latif, the film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The trailer opens with a shot of a man, protagonist Charles Blakey (Corey Hawkins), standing alone on a beach at sunset, a serene but melancholic image. A voiceover tells us that his family has "been searching our hearts to be kind since your mum died." We soon learn that Charles, down on his luck and on the verge of losing his ancestral home in Sag Harbor, New York, receives a strange proposition from a mysterious businessman, Anniston Bennet (Willem Dafoe). The trailer builds a sense of unease as we see the interaction between the two men. Bennet, played with a subtle menace by Willem Dafoe, offers a bizarre deal: rent his dusty basement for the summer for enough money to clear Charles's debts. A shot of the two men sitting across from each other in a dimly lit room, with Bennet's intense gaze fixed on Charles, hints at the sinister nature of their agreement. As Charles accepts the offer, the trailer's tone shifts dramatically. What begins as a seemingly simple transaction quickly descends into a terrifying psychological puzzle.
